Tech Support Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Tech Support
Reminder that on October 10th, 2023, Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will no longer be supported.

Keeping your business on an outdated server means you’ll likely experience frequent crashes, incompatibility with new software, limited or terminated technical support, and (arguably most importantly) high vulnerability to ransomware and other cyberattacks. And those are just the bigger issues—issues with performance and efficiency are sure to plague you daily as well.

October 10th is End of Support for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2

Tech Support Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Tech Support
Is your business still running on Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2?

According to Microsoft, support for these servers will end on October 10th, 2023. This means that after October 10th, they will no longer be getting security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. This makes all businesses running on these servers easy targets for hackers.

If your business is still running on a Server 2012 system chances are you’re relying on other old hardware and technology at your office. Keeping your hardware and software up to date is best business practice—relying on old, unsupported hardware automatically puts your business at significant risk.

How to Get Faster Internet | IT Solutions in Ann Arbor

If you notice slow speeds on your WIFI or network, then it is time to start checking the common issues. There are several solutions that you can try on your own before calling in the pros. Here are the three biggest steps in investigating slow internet:

Close Unnecessary Applications

Closing unnecessary applications is the easiest first step. If that doesn’t restore your speed, then it may be an issue with your hardware, network congestion, or your internet provider.  One easy step is to reboot your modem, router, and switches to see if that helps.

Call Your Internet Provider

Another option is to call your internet provider to see if something is slowing down the internet service. If the option is available to you, you can also try connecting your device directly to your modem to check the speed there.  If it’s still slow it’s likely an issue with your provider.  If it’s fast, then you likely have issues further downstream with your firewall, switches, computers, or even cabling.  Troubleshooting this can require some detective work.  NSG can help you track this down if you’d like some help.

Update Your Hardware and Software

Sometimes when we are called in to help troubleshoot issues with network and internet speeds, we find that consumer grade equipment was used, was improperly installed, and was never maintained or updated.  This can all lead to slow downs and cause other problems including security concerns.

Do you have a rat’s nest of cables?  Switches all over the place and daisy chained together?  When were your router, WIFI, and switches installed and/or last maintained and updated?  If the answer isn’t any time recently then those are all causes for concern, both in terms of speed and security.

In order to avoid problems and optimize performance you want to make sure you have the right gear, properly installed, and have a plan in place to ensure it is maintained and updated.

Learn more about the causes of slow internet here.

Staying Proactive Against Hackers

Computer Consultants Ann Arbor
Are you worried about the online safety of your business?

Do you want to proactively block cyber-threats?

In this digital age, cyber security is one of many issues business owners must worry about. With hackers and scammers constantly trying to steal your information, it can be hard to feel safe. Being proactive is the best way to combat these attacks and put your mind at ease.

Due to the recent political unrest overseas, we were alerted by the Michigan State Police warning of potential internet security threats to watch out for. Certain IP addresses were flagged as unsafe and at risk of causing harm. NSG was able to get ahead of these threats and proactively block these IP addresses for all our clients with maintenance plans. These clients know they can focus on running their business instead of worrying about the safety of their information online.
